Outstanding October

No we have not moved the shop to the Old Town Hall in Londonderry!  But, we did confuse a lot of folks driving by.  This was the scene of our 2011 Quilter's Challenge Party!

Each challenger was given 3 paint chips.  They were to match those colors to fabric and could add up to 3 more colors of their choice, plus black or white.  The theme of the challenge was "The Four Seasons".

We all brought a pot luck dish to share and gathered on this cold, wet Saturday to view the quilts and vote on our favorites.

These cookies were a big hit. As were all the yummy dishes on the tables.

What an amazing array of food with no two dishes alike!

We had 18 projects presented and there were 25 in attendance.  The Old Town Hall was a perfect venue for the event.

Here are some of our outstanding entries.

Our 1st Place Winner was Marcia S. with her take on the theme!  How clever.

Jan was our 2nd place winner with another musical theme.  This time Vivaldi...wow!

Lydia whipped up this elegant pillow and won 3rd place! And...we had to have a 4th prize!

Another Vivaldi 4 Seasons theme made into a classy wallhanging by Mary B.!

All the entries came with a written description explaining the artist's thought process and ideas.  Voting was based on best interpretation of the theme and the best reproduction of the color scheme based on the paint chips.  All of the entries were definetly winners!

This is Nancy B.'s 4th quilt.  Gee, I think we have a real talent here.  This is a applique with a Hawaiian flavor. Wonderful interpretation of the theme.

Sue D.'s paper pieced beauty.  Another great theme and color interpretation.

Virginia did a very good job matching colors!  Way to sew!

Autumnal August

There is Fall in the air in Southern Vermont.  The leaves are starting to change.  What a perfect time to get those sewing projects in order!  We are so excited about some new arrivals here at the WWHQS.

It seems like we have been waiting forever for our Kaffe Fassett Collective Design Rolls to arrive.

We offer 4 colorways.  Red, Green, Neutral and Blue.  There are 30 2 1/2" strips in each bundle.

$34.50 per roll

Here is a great pattern for the design rolls by Jaybird Quilts.

A baby quilt takes 24 assorted strips, a Lap takes 54 strips, a Twin takes 78 strips and a Queen takes 129 strips.  Pattern is $10.

And new fabric from Lecien is here!

Yummy Fat Quarters!

Yay!  "Mochi Mochi" fabrics from Lecien are here!  The colors are based on Japanese sweet treats called Mochi.  Monica S. Snow is the designer of these darling prints.

We will be combining the "Flower Sugar" line with" Mochi Mochi"

This is Paris Apartment.  We have 5 pieces in the line. 

"Treasures and Tidbits" from Kaufman by Piece O'Cake Designs.  We have the whole line in fat quarter bundles and 13 prints on bolts.

2 fat quarter bundles will make this great pattern called "Off The Rail"  by Jaybird Quilts.

How cute is this?  Julie Herman is the designer of these patterns by JayBird.

Piece O' Cake designed an applique quilt for this line of fabric called "Fresh Picked Posies".

Full size patterns and great instructions.  Can't wait to make this!  Fusible applique of course! ;)

Here is one more pattern by JayBird Quilts, called Bamboo.  We will have kits available ASAP using the "TidBits and Treasures" line.  This quilt pattern works great for any fabric line. I am finishing a quilt using "Juicy Blossoms" from Quilting Treasures.  I will reveal the sample soon. (Gotta sew the binding on)!

 And finally, look what I found in my local Antique Shoppe!  This beauty is a "G" series made in Elizabethtown New Jersey between 1911 and 1920.  It works too.  We are using it for display. 

The decals are called "Red Eye"  Here is a pic of this beautiful scroll work on the metal plate.

And I couldn't believe my luck.  I  scored this treadle table too!

Our "Couture Ruffled Clutch Class" was a blast.  The ladies finished their bags and are planning to make more!  Jessica VanDenburgh was a dynamite teacher, everyone raved!  We are planning a second class on Saturday, November 5th  for those of you who missed the August session.  Stay tuned for more info.  Here are a couple of pics from the class.

Ruthie used  fabric from the Ebony and Ivory line by with a pop of red orange batik on the ruffle.

Jessica supplied the glue, frame, screwdrivers and timers for each student.  Student's supplied 2 fat quarters, matching thread and scraps for the ruffles.  Here is a close up of one of Jennifer's samples we have at the shop.

Jennifer also has frames with chains for shoulder bags and these frames are hypoallegenic and nickel free!  Wow!

June is Jumpin' At The WWHQS

Just getting around to posting pics from the Glen's Falls Quilter's Quild show we attended in Queensbury New York last weekend.  Our booth set up went more quickly this time and again, we received tons of compliments on our setup as well as our merchandise! :D  Here are some booth shots... We met so many quilter's who have never been to the shop.  We are looking forward to seeing our new quilting friends soon. 

I was so impressed by the quality of the quilts in the show.  I picked a favorite and gave her my Vendor's Choice Award.   When I first saw this quilt, I thought, now here is a quilter after my own heart!  We are on the same wavelength!

Lisa Filion's  Quilt.  Love the colors and the improv piecing, not to mention the big stitch hand quilting "Ala Kaffe Fassett."  Here is a detail pic.

I have been doing a little sewing at home, but first I had to clean up my area!

I haven't seen this much table space behind my machine in ages!

This is neat and tidy, for me!

I am trying to rescue 4 beautiful orphan blocks I made a years ago in a class with Deb Tucker at Fletcher Farm School of Crafts in Ludlow Vermont.  The pattern is called "Dizzy Flying Geese" and it was before Deb's "Wing  Clipper" ruler days.  I used reproduction fabric designed by Froncie Quinn from the quilt collections at the Shelburne Museum.  I loved the bright colors then and of course I still love them now!  See, I sew with repro fabric too!

The center panel is a cheater and is a reproduction of a quilt made by Florence Peto called Grandma's Flower Garden.  The actual quilt, on display at the Shelburne Museum is very small with needle turn applique!  The colors are right on.  The problem will be the borders, they will need to be pieced.  Flying Geese probably....and I will definetly use the Wing Clipper ruler!

Would love to do big stitch quilting on the panel...it has printed stitch lines on the fabric!  This could be a lifetime project!

I am also working on a quilt using the "Stonehenge" pre-cuts from Northcott.  They are beautiful! The pattern has you make the quilt in quarters.  You stack the 4 quarters and cut a half circle, then reassemble the pieces.  The whole project is based on value, lights, mediums and darks.

On Tuesday, July 19th we are having a special Bargello Class taught by Jan Broude of the Quiet Valley Quilt Guild.  Jan is an expert in this piecing method and is a whiz with color and value.  There is so much to gain from taking this class.  Jan is full of tips and quilting history!  Here is a small sample of her work.  Please register ASAP for this class as there is a materials list you will need prior to the class so you can start collecting fabrics.  Call or email me to register.

             Here is our line up of classes and events for May, 2011.

Sunday, May 1 or Sunday May 22nd-  Paper Piecing Workshop  Learn the secrets of Paper Piecing  also known as "Foundation Piecing"  The most complicated quilt blocks are usually paper pieced.  Think "Mariner's Compass" or any block with lots of points and tiny pieces.  Paper piecing makes these blocks a snap.  $25 plus materials.  1-4 pm

Example, projects will vary.

Every Tuesday is Open Sewing  Sew with friends and meet new ones.  $5  10:30-3:30.   No Instructor 

Wednesday, May 4th or Wednesday, May 18th- Totally Awesome Tote Bag This pattern from "For The Love of Fabric" by Karen West  is a winner.  A sturdy tote, measuring 14"x17" makes a great quick gift.  It has a large outer pocket and inner pocket.  We have 2 kit versions or you can pick your own fabric.  10:30-3:30 pm.  $25 plus kit fee or materials list.

Saturday May 7th or Friday May 20th-Paint Stix on Fabric/ Rubbing Plates - Learn how to use these fabulous oil pastels made expecially for fabric by Cedar Canyon.  This class will focus on "rubbing plates" and color blending.  You will create blocks for a wall hanging, pillow, pocket for a bag or quilt.  10:30-12:30 pm.  $15 plus materials and book fee.  Suitable for ages 10 and up.

This is a Holiday version using the "Holiday" rubbing plates.  You have other image options such as leaves, flowers and or curves.

Sunday, May 8th- My First Table Runner- Introduction to quilting.-  Learn the basics of piecing a quilt top.    You will focus on pressing, cutting, pinning and piecing a small table runner.  Ages 10 and up.  1-4 pm.  $20 plus tools and  $15 Kit fee.

Wednesday, May 11th-  "Mumbo Gumbo" a pattern by "Pie In The Sky Quilts"-  This is a fabulous stash buster quilts that will use up a lot of scraps.  It is so-oooo simple and fun!  Finished size is 63"x84", you can add borders to make it bigger.  10:30- 3:30 pm.  $30 plus materials list.  This is suitable for a confident beginner.

Thursday, May 12, or Saturday, May 21- Improvisational Quilting Class-  Learn how to piece a block without a pattern.  This is an intuitive process and tons of fun!  This is a class not to be confused with our Improv Club.  You will learn several improvisational techniques.  10:30-12:30.  $20 plus a $10 materials fee.

Saturday, May 14th- $5 Club/Sold Out  10:30 am  and our "Solids Challenge Party"    11:30-1:30 pm.   We will still be open for regular business today but we will be hosting a pot luck luncheon for our Challengers who participated in our quilt contest where sewers had to use only solid fabrics and 2 1/2 " strips.  We will be displaying all the quilts on the porch!  Come and see  our talented customer's interpretations of this Challenge!

Sunday, May 15th- 1 Yard Shopping Totebag - Make a quick snazzy tote using just 1 yard of fabric!  1-4 pm $25.

Thursday, May 19th -  Free Motion Quilting Techniques - This is an introductory class to Free Motion Quilting.  You must bring in a sewing machine with a darning foot and that has a feature to lower the feed dogs.  1-3pm  $20 plus materials list and book purchase.

Thursday, May 26th- Fusible Applique Wall Hanging-  Learn the secrets of machine applique.  Recreate the quilt designed by Shelley for the 2011 Shop Hop, "Kaffe's Flower Shop".  10:30-3:30 pm $25 plus kit fee or materials list.  Bring a Lunch.

Hand Applique and Embroidery Club-1:30-3:30- $25 registration fee and $5 per session.  Join Judith and Shelley and work on any hand sewing project.  Share ideas and techniques.  Tea and cookies served!  A relaxing afternoon of sewing and conversation.  This club meets the last Friday of every month.

Saturday, May 28th- Paintstix on Fabric- Stenciling Techniques  - Using special negative and positive shapes these stencils make unusual patterns.  You can make wall hangings, table runners, bags, pillows and much more.  Paintstix ,after drying, are heat set with an iron and the fabric is then washable!  10:30-12:30 pm  $15 plus materials and book purchase.

Sunday, May 29th- Finishing Your Quilt- Bring in your finished quilt top and learn to layer,quilt and bind your quilt.  (Bring in a small wall hanging or table runner)  1-4 pm $25.

In what was once the original living room of this old house, you will find unique flannels and lucious wools and wool felt.  We carry moda wool as well as "Weeks Dye Works" and National Nonwovens wool/felt blends.  For our hand embroidery friends we have Finca #12 perle cottons in an array of colors for cross stitching, wool applique and redwork.  Here you will also find wonderful books and patterns that feature wool and embroidery projects.

 
Art Quilting Supplies occupy a portion of this space.  We feature supplies to alter fabric such as Shiva Oil Paint Stix, Rubbing Plates and Stencils from Cedar Canyon. fabric paints and dyes, Angelina Fibers, foils, fabric markers, wool blank bags to embellish  with charms from "Art Girlz", wool roving and felting equipment, buttons and more!

November & Early December Classes and Events

Tuesdays- Open Sewing $5  10:30-3:30

Wednesday, November 3rd- Basic Free Motion Quilting  $20  1-4PM.  Your machine must have an "open toe" embroidery foot.  Bring several 16"x16" squares of fabric, batting and backing, include a light fabric, a dark fabric and a large print fabric.  You will also need 'King Tut" quilting thread a size 90 sharp or quilting needle and basting spray, plus your regular sewing supplies.

Thursday, November 4th- Kwik Sew Pajama Pants.  $15, 10:30-2 PM.  Bring a lunch.  What a great gift for family members. Patterns are available in a variety of sizes. Pattern purchase required.  Supplies are listed on the back of the pattern.  Bring scissors, pins,pencil and thread. Class is repeated on Thursday, December 2nd.

Friday, November 5th- Easy Striped Table Runner.  $20  1-5 PM.  Pattern Purchase and 60degree triangle required.  Whip up these simple, yet impressive runners using mirror image striped border fabric.  Pattern makes 2 runners. Bring basic sewing supplies.  Materials list is on pattern.
This class will be repeated on Wednesday, November 10th.

Saturday, November, 6th- Paintstix on Fabric, Christmas Rubbing Plates.  $15 1-4 PM.  Learn to use Shiva oil Paintstix and rubbing plates to make quilt blocks, placemats, table runners, pot holders and more.  Purchase of Paintstix and rubbing plates required.  Use black fabric or any dark color for dramatic results. Also bring basting spray and basic sewing supplies.
This class will be repeated on December 1, 2010.

Sunday, November 7th- Christmas Tree Skirt. $20, 1-4 PM- A very easy, yet beautiful tree skirt, 45" in diameter. Based on the pattern, "Speedy Spiral" from Cheryl Philip's book , Quilts Without Corners you will learn to use a 10 degree wedge ruler and sew strip sets with our gorgeous Holiday Fabric. (Confident Beginner)

Announcing our 2nd Quilter's Challenge for Autumn and early Winter!

Rules for this challenge are as follows.  Use only solid or fabrics that read as solids( such as "Dimples" or other tiny prints) and 2 1/2" squares. 

 You may use just 2 colors or more. Quilt can be any size. 

We are offering bundles of solids in any colorway-  25 F.Q.'s for $25.  Call to order and we can ship. 

 Our Pot Luck Party and Show&Tell will be scheduled in early February, so you have lots of time. 

Please call or email to be added to the list of Challengers.  We will have prizes for many categories. 

Our 1st Challenge "9 Patch" this summer was such fun we can't wait to start this new contest.

Glorious Quilts

Our customers are so darn talented!  Look at these beautiful quilts.  The first two are part of our 9 Patch Challenge event.

Sue Morrison's tilted 9 patch. Love the setting.

Moira's 9 Patch, beautiful florals.

 

Sandy's wool applique in a crazy log cabin setting.  This is all hand appliqued and will be hand quilted.  Way to sew, Sandy!

Okay, now here are some samples of Truddie Greene's work.  She sells her quilts and wall hangings locally and does quilts on commission.  She is amazingly talented using Kaffe Fassett's fabrics.  In this table runner, Truddie quilted a length of Philip Jacob's Seashell fabric for Westminster Fibers.  We have this fabric in 4 colorways.  It is too pretty to cut up!!

Sitting atop this quilt made by Amy H. and her 11 year old daughter is Miss Waterwheel in her new outfit, designed by Patty Young for Mod Kids patterns.  The fabric is by Patty for Michael Miller.  We have a whole new line of wearables for little girls and their dolls.  We also have a new line of "Voile" fabric and patterns for filmy summer blouses and dresses for women.  The Waterwheel House is not just about quilting.  We are about SEWING!!

Great class last weekend.  These gals are getting a head start on their Christmas projects.  Pictured are seated, Cindy, standing in pink is Ceil and Carol in blue.  Their log cabin wreath wall hangings will be beautiful  We still have a few kits available.
